In 2023, Kia undertook a comprehensive redesign of the Sportage, aiming to deliver a small crossover SUV that excels in multiple areas. The result was an impressive fifth-generation Sportage, boasting ample space for passengers and cargo, a distinctive and stylish design, cutting-edge technology, and even a variant tailored for off-road adventures. The introduction of hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, each reviewed separately, expanded the Sportage lineup, offering both power and efficiency. Combined with Kia’s renowned warranty coverage and competitive pricing, the 2024 Sportage appeared poised to lead its class.
However, one area where improvement could have been welcomed was in terms of power, although no such enhancements materialized. The base four-cylinder engine in the Sportage proved to be unremarkable and relatively inefficient. Conversely, the Sportage Hybrid generated more power, which proved advantageous for highway merging and passing, all while significantly improving fuel efficiency.
For those considering alternatives, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-50, both highly-rated small SUVs, merit attention. The CR-V, in particular, can match the Sportage in terms of space, while the CX-50 stands out for its superior performance, albeit at the cost of some utility. Hyundai’s related Tucson also stands as a worthy alternative. The Sportage is mostly unchanged for 2024.
