Developed in collaboration with Toyota, the Solterra boasts Subaru’s signature all-wheel-drive system and driving dynamics, making it adept on both moderate off-road trails and challenging weather conditions like rain and snow.
Competing in a crowded segment, the Solterra faces rivals such as its Toyota bZ4X counterpart, the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Volkswagen ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron, and lower trims of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. While some competitors may offer more size, power, or driving range, none match the Solterra’s off-road capabilities.
Inside, the Solterra provides ample space for four passengers, although fitting a fifth person in the bench-style back seat may feel cramped. Equipped with a host of standard features, including Subaru’s low-speed hands-free driving system, the Solterra offers more cargo space compared to many competitors. For charging, the Solterra uses a 72.8-kWh battery pack, offering an EPA-rated range of up to 228 miles. Charging at home or in the workplace takes approximately nine hours with a Level 2 charger, while DC fast-charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes.
Inside, the Solterra boasts a minimalist dash layout with a spacious center console housing an 8- or 12.3-inch touchscreen, depending on trim level. The interior offers soft-touch fabric surfaces, real knobs and switches for audio and climate controls, and ample storage space throughout.
While the Solterra may not lead the segment in range or power, it appeals to Subaru enthusiasts seeking a capable and environmentally friendly SUV. Despite its drawbacks, the Solterra delivers advanced technology and comfort features in a familiar and user-friendly package.
