In a market where minivans have seen a decline in popularity, Kia has taken a unique approach by merging the advantages of a minivan with the aesthetics of an SUV, aptly naming it an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle).
The 2022 model year introduced the Kia Carnival, designed by the Kia Design Center in Irvine, Calif. Despite the absence of all-wheel drive or off-road capabilities, the Carnival presents a rugged exterior. However, step inside, and you’ll discover the essence of a true minivan. Dual sliding doors facilitate effortless entry and exit, while the versatile seating arrangements can accommodate up to eight passengers. Even passengers in the third row are treated to ample headroom and legroom, complete with cupholders and USB ports for added comfort. Notably, a cabin camera and intercom system enable front-seat occupants to stay connected with those in the rear seats.
What truly surprises is the Carnival’s driving experience. Despite its substantial size, it defies expectations of wallowing in corners, offering stability with minimal body lean. Cruising at highway speeds is a comfortable and quiet affair. With 290 horsepower under the hood, it also delivers an enjoyable driving performance, though a more fuel-efficient hybrid variant, akin to the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica, would be a welcome addition. Given Kia’s portfolio of hybrid models, the possibility of a hybrid Carnival in the future remains open.
Kia may have attempted to label the Carnival as an SUV, even dubbing it an MPV, perhaps to distance itself from the minivan category. However, with its spacious interior, exceptional utility, and impressive on-road attributes, there’s no denying that the Carnival is not just any minivan—it’s an exceptional one.
For the 2024 model year, the Kia Carnival retains its current form with only minor packaging updates, keeping its winning formula intact.
