Jeep responded to the feedback of past Compass buyers who expressed their desire for more power, increased torque, and reduced engine noise. The 2023 Compass delivers on these demands with an all-new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, boasting a robust 200 horsepower (an impressive gain of 23 hp from the previous model) and a remarkable 221 pound-feet of torque (a substantial increase of 49 lb-ft). Notably, the engine operates significantly quieter, leaving behind the old, coarse-sounding 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Jeep dedicated time to fine-tuning the eight-speed transmission and drive modes, aiming to provide a more responsive and enjoyable driving experience. Did they succeed? Absolutely. The new engine effortlessly accelerates, requiring less effort to reach higher speeds. On winding mountain roads near Los Angeles, the Compass maintains impressive velocities on steep canyons with minimal throttle input. In urban settings, it effortlessly keeps pace with traffic, all while the turbocharged engine delivers ample torque to the tires without straining the 2.0-liter powerplant, resulting in reduced engine noise.

Jeep invested effort into recalibrating the steering and suspension of the new Compass. Notably, the Latitude and Limited models, which are among the bestsellers, have received distinct steering calibrations tailored to their respective tire configurations. This level of attention to detail ensures each model offers precise steering. On mountainous routes, the Compass demonstrates composed handling and rarely deviates from its intended path. While some competitors in the segment, such as the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona, emphasize sporty characteristics, the Compass strikes a well-balanced compromise between ride comfort and handling. It competes favorably with leading rivals like the Kia Niro and Toyota Corolla Cross.

Jeep has made all-wheel drive a standard feature across all models, providing a degree of all-weather capability for every Compass. Unlike many subcompact crossovers that claim to offer off-road prowess, the Compass genuinely delivers on its promise. However, to fully unlock its off-road capabilities, choosing the Trailhawk model is essential. We subjected the Trailhawk to challenging terrain in the hills north of Malibu, California, and found that the recalibrated drive modes represented a significant improvement over previous models. In Rock mode, the enhanced traction control intervenes promptly, effectively channeling power with minimal tire slippage. The result is that the 2023 Compass Trailhawk exhibits greater off-road stability than its predecessor.

The interior of the Compass was entirely revamped just last year and continues to impress. It provides a pleasant environment for occupants. In the Limited model, upscale contrast stitching adorns the dash and doors, and a stylish chrome strip accents the dash surround. Ample padding is thoughtfully placed where the driver would appreciate it, including the center console cover. Moreover, like its predecessors, the Compass offers generous rear seat legroom, ensuring the comfort of rear passengers.
